News on Korean Regulations: Four deregulations in IoT in 2016
07/14/2016 | By NETMANIAS (tech@netmanias)

Four deregulations in IoT in 2016.

1. Alleviation of transmit power limit in IoT-dedicated network (May 2016)

- Transmit power limit in IoT-dedicated, unlicensed 900 MHz band (917 - 923.5 MHz) raised from 10 mW to 200 mW by 20 times

- 'Radio Equipment Directive' amended by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) in May 2016

- Costs for building networks down by 70%

- SK Telecom launched a nationwide IoT-dedicated network in the end of June

2. Additional spectrum assignment for IoT (scheduled in October 2016)

- Additional spectrums at 1.7 GHz and 5 GHz assigned for IoT to cope with expected increase in demands as more IoT devices are used

- 'Table of Radio Frequency Allocation' and ‘Standards of Radio Equipment' to be amended by the MSIP in Oct. 2016

3. Approval process waiver for IoT plans (scheduled in September 2016)

- To expedite launch of new services, approval for IoT plans is no longer required

- Relevant government notification to be amended by the MSIP in Sep. 2016

4. Alleviation of requirements for location information service (scheduled in September 2016)

- Location information-based business requires filing only, and not permission any more

Relevant act ('Act on the Protection, Use, etc. of Location Information') to be amended by the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) in Sep. 2016
