Chairman Hwang Chang Kyu to transform KT into a platform provider with over 20% of its revenues coming from platform business by 2020
02/11/2017 | By Netmanias (tech@netmanias.com)
  • Key businesses in the future: 5 key platforms - media, smart energy, enterprise/public value enhancement, financial transaction, safety
  • New level of services and solutions driven by intelligent network and ICT capabilities

Last week, at the ‘2017 New Year Strategies Workshop’, KT Chairman Hwang Chang Kyu unveiled a blueprint for the management strategies in his second term, announcing his great ambition to boost ‘five key platforms’ (media, smart energy, enterprise/public value enhancement, financial transaction, safety) for the three years to come.

Positioning as a platform provider with five key platforms (media, smart energy, enterprise/public value enhancement, financial transaction, safety)
Firs of all, to ‘lead the rapidly changing market’, Chairman Hwang strongly believed KT should evolve from a traditional telco to an intelligent network based platform provider. To this end, instead of sticking to traditional business models used in Internet portal or mobile app business, the company will seek ways of offering customized services and solutions that better fit the needs of customers (end users or enterprises) by fully leveraging its technological prowess in IPTV, big data, cloud, etc.

The 5G era, set to begin in 2~3 years, will likely serve as a critical foundation for KT to position itself as a successful platform provider. The company is making every endeavor possible as a ‘5G pioneer’, for example, launching the world’s first 5G trial service during the PyeongChang Winter Olympic event to be held in one year.

Chairman Hwang declared five key platforms - media, smart energy, enterprise/public value enhancement, financial transaction, safety – that he planned to make key future business areas for the company. His goal is to transform the company into a successful platform provider that supplies it with over 20% of its revenue coming from non-communication sector by 2020.

Way out
Second, to continue the transformation it has made for the past three years, KT has to find a way out to overcome barriers that it has faced while operating its business so far. He also stressed the importance of setting an aggressive strategy to enter the global market.

Leadership
Third, he emphasized KT will take the lead in initiatives in all areas, like environment and safety, as well as ICT to become No. 1 company in Korea.
