Samsung Electronics Commercialises the World's First 3-Band Carrier Aggregation in a 4G LTE Network
12/31/2014 | By NETMANIAS (tech@netmanias.com)

New network provides an advanced LTE experience with download speeds of 300 Mbps

Samsung Electronics today announced it has deployed the world’s first 3-Band Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology in an LTE commercial network, increasing download speed to 300 Mbps, four times faster than a normal LTE network.

Based on Samsung’s LTE Advanced (LTE-A) 3-Band CA technology, customers on two Korean mobile operators can enjoy more powerful, uninterrupted multimedia and web browsing experiences. The LTE-A 3-Band CA networks are currently available for customers in the Seoul metropolitan area, one of the most densely populated areas in the world and the service will be rolled out nationwide next year.

“As people increasingly demand data heavy applications such as HD video on their mobile devices, the telecommunications industry needs innovative technologies that enable significant performance enhancements over existing network infrastructure, said Youngky Kim, President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics.

“Our LTE-A 3-Band CA technology lets people enjoy the best possible mobile experience, while allowing operators to seize an opportunity to differentiate the capabilities of their networks.”

With a long-term commitment to the telecommunications industry, Samsung commercialised the world's first Dual-Band CA network in June 2013 in Korea. Samsung leveraged the experience gained from this innovation leadership to develop a 3-Band CA solution which further cements the capabilities of LTE-A and brings the industry one step closer to the 5G era.

While 3-Band CA is considered to be a technology significantly improving the throughput capacity of mobile networks, particularly in densely populated areas, its ability to aggregate heavily fragmented spectrum brings important spectral efficiency to operators with limited spectrum availability. With 3-Band CA, operators can provide a truly advanced LTE experience to their customers, by allowing fragmented blocks of data across multiple spectrums to function as a single, larger unified block.

Following the commercialisation of the LTE-A 3-Band CA network, Samsung launched the world's first LTE-A 3-Band CA enabled Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The simultaneous introduction of the device and network technologies highlights Samsung's unique capabilities to accelerate the deployment of the next generation of mobile technologies within the industry.
