Quantum Mobile, Sejong Telecom, and K Mobile compete for 4th Mobile Telecommunication Business in Korea
11/06/2015 | By An, Hochun (hcan@etnews.com)

With the right to become 4th mobile telecommunication business in place, Quantum Mobile, Sejong Telecom, and K Mobile are competing against each other.

Ministry of Science, ICP and Future Planning (MSIP) had made an announcement on the 30th that it had received applications from 3 corporations Quantum Mobile, Sejong Mobile, and K Mobile after finishing its application process, which had lasted for 2 months since 31st of August, for approval to become a common carrier and for frequency allocation. Sejong Mobile is a corporation that was established by Sejong Telecom specifically for this business.

Quantum Mobile is being led by CEO Park Sung Do who used to work as Vice-President of Hyundai Mobis. Truewin, which is a manufacturer for automobile sensors and qualified as a major shareholder, has stood surety for surety insurance that will substitute deposit for price of frequency allocation. Other shareholders are not known.

Sejong Telecom has participated in this business by itself. Sejong Telecom has received attention as it was known that it is preparing for this business through Etnews in last August. Although it said that it could not tell whether it was participating or not even when the deadline was approaching, it has finally decided to participate in this business.

K Mobile is being led by CEO Kim Yong Goon, who is a professor and from Korea Mobile Internet (KMI), and out of 3 businesses that are participating, people know least information about it. It is known that its group of directors is comprised of formal high government officials and it is widely rumored that it is working with huge global business.

Quantum Mobile and K Mobile have chosen LTE-TDD that uses 2.5 GHz bandwidth, and Sejong Mobile has chosen LTE-FDD that uses 2.6 GHz bandwidth. From early on, Sejong Telecom has put importance in LTE-FDD.

MSIP will immediately start on qualification examination for frequency allocation and for being a common carrier on these 3 corporations. After looking at their qualifications by end of next month, it will notify them.
