Private 5G operator in Korea: NAVER Cloud

     Overview

NAVER Cloud, a cloud provider, was approved as a private 5G common carrier by the Ministry of Science and ICT in December 2021, becoming the first private 5G operator in South Korea.

In December 2021, NAVER Cloud requested for and was granted private 5G frequencies of 4.7 GHz (100 MHz) and 28 GHz (600 MHz) from the Ministry of Science and ICT to construct a private 5G network for NAVER's second office building in Bundang.

In May 2023, NAVER Cloud set up a 4.7 GHz private 5G network at Hoban Construction's construction site to test construction solutions. This is the first time NAVER Cloud has provided and demonstrated a private 5G network to an external company.

Recently, safety issues at construction sites have emerged as the Serious Accidents Punishment Act has been strengthened. By introducing private 5G to construction sites, it is expected that work efficiency and safety can be secured.

NAVER Cloud has built a private 5G network using private frequencies at Hoban Construction's construction site covering an area of about 40,000 square meters.

NAVER Cloud has verified autonomous drones, PTT (Push To Talk), safety vests that can make video calls, wireless CCTV, and hydration heat sensors based on the private 5G network.

A 5G brainless robot is an autonomous robot that operates by connecting to a robot operation and control cloud (ARC: AI, Robot, Cloud) via 5G. The goal is to create smart robots at a low cost.

  • Lower robot cost: i) off-loading computing for autonomous processing from the robot and moving it to the cloud (off-loading device processing), ii) lower robot manufacturing cost by equipping the robot (Rookie) with low-cost cameras instead of expensive LiDAR (indoor 3D map generation is done by a separate mapping robot, A-LIKE M)
  • Smarter robots: Processing for robot autonomous driving (indoor localization, object recognition, collision avoidance, etc.) can be performed in the cloud, where resources such as compute and storage are abundant, allowing for more sophisticated algorithms and easier algorithm updates.
  • Operation: High-performance processing such as indoor positioning, object/face recognition, and avoidance control to control the driving path of autonomous robots is not performed on the robot, but is processed in the cloud (ARC: AI, Robot, Cloud: an application/algorithm that simultaneously shares information with dozens to hundreds of robots in a building and controls autonomous driving paths in ultra-low latency and real-time) through a private 5G network with ultra-low latency characteristics (cloud computing).

    1. Robots transmit sensing data such as camera images to the cloud (ARC) at very short intervals through a private 5G network.

    2. The ARC compares the current camera image with the digital twin of the space (3D map) to identify the location of the robot and calculate/judge the direction of the robot's movement.

    3. Delivers the calculation/judgment results to the robot via a private 5G network

  • Advantages: i) lower manufacturing costs due to fewer processing units in the robots, lower battery consumption to run longer, smarter performance due to the use of a high-performance cloud as long as the robots are connected to a private 5G network, and ii) update the S/W of all robots at the same time (only update the ARC in the cloud, not each robot individually).

Why NAVER Cloud chose a private 5G network

  • Ultra-low-latency communication: NAVER Cloud needs an ultra-low-latency network to control autonomous robots in real time, which is not possible over Wi-Fi.
  • Robots are mobile: A seamless communication network is required for handover due to robot movement, which is not possible with Wi-Fi (when the robot leaves the AP coverage, it disconnects and reconnects to the new AP after a while - during this time, application-level services such as driving control of autonomous robots are temporarily disconnected, which can lead to collisions between robots and humans).
  • Communication networks that NAVER Cloud can configure: To control the path of cloud-controlled autonomous robots (brainless robots), the robots need to transmit camera images to the cloud at very short intervals and in real time, which requires a large uplink bandwidth. The carrier's 5G network is download-oriented and has a fixed link capacity, so the uplink capacity is small.
  • NAVER Cloud has built its on-premise wireless network as a private 5G network with the following advantages: the low latency of several ms required to implement the brainless robot concept is basically provided by the private 5G network; the robot moves continuously over a large area and requires an uninterrupted communication network, and since 5G is a mobile communication network technology, it provides uninterrupted handover when the device moves, as experienced in cell phone calls; and the private 5G network allows companies to configure the 5G network, so the uplink capacity can be adjusted by the company itself according to its needs.
