Blockchain In Telecom : Hype or Reality ?

Telecom industry is huge and often complex. In the past decade or so, telecom operators are hit by a number of disruptive technologies decreasing their revenues and increasing operating costs e.g. competition from over the top (OTT) players. Also, the telco industry is in the midst of transformation as it moves towards 5G, IoT and a virtualized ecosystem . So adding blockchain into this equation must offer some measurable and quick benefits to current operations as well as towards the enablement of future opportunities. Let’s have a look at some of the use cases which blockchain technology can provide in telecom.

Opinion: Can Nordic rivals stop the Chinese juggernaut?

Ten years ago, there were around 7-8 telecom network equipment makers in the market e.g. Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei, Siemens, Motorola, Alcatel, lucent, Nortel etc. That was the time when third generation networks were getting deployed and the focus was shifting from voice to data across the globe.

Is VoWiFi the next disruptive telecom technology?

Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) can be one such innovation which can truly change the way we use voice call today. In fact, Deloitte predicted that by the end of 2016, about 100 carriers worldwide will be offering at least one packet-based voice service (VoWiFi or VoLTE). In one of my previous article, I explained the benefits of Voice over LTE (VoLTE). But, this is where the opportunity lies for VoWiFi.
