Basic ALTO Architecture (draft-ietf-alto-protocol-12 )
1. Using ALTO for CDN (background: Without ALTO)
Static Configuration
(Operational Overhead)
2. Using ALTO for CDN
ALTO
3. Using ALTO for CDN: Nearest (ALTO) + Edge Server Load
4. Using ALTO for CDN: Nearest (ALTO) + Edge Server Load
5. Using ALTO for CDN: Dynamic Network Information (example)

Basic ALTO Architecture (draft-ietf-alto-protocol-12 )
1. Using ALTO for CDN (background: Without ALTO)
Static Configuration
- Operator configures “edge server & end user subnet info” to the Request Router
- Disadvantage: CDN must be controlled by the same entity as ALTO server
- Disadvantage: When “end user subnet” is changed, operator should change configuration manually (Operational Overhead)
2. Using ALTO for CDN
ALTO
- NSP & CDN may be operated by different entities (even within the same operator) ? Decouples the CDN application from the network
- Advantage: It’s not required to configure Request Router manually. It can reduce operational overhead when “subscriber IP subnet” is changed frequently
- Advantage: NSP can hide physical network and routing topology from the CDN operator because only “ranking information” will be provided
3. Using ALTO for CDN: Nearest (ALTO) + Edge Server Load
- Ranking Algorithm of ALTO Server is not subjected to standard
4. Using ALTO for CDN: Nearest (ALTO) + Edge Server Load
5. Using ALTO for CDN: Dynamic Network Information (example)
