Private 5G operator in Korea: NEWGENS
Overview |
In November 2022, Newgens (Korean SI company) was approved by the government as a private 5G common carrier, allowing it to provide private 5G services to corporate customers.
In November 2022, Newgens applied for and were allocated 4.7 GHz (4.72-4.82GHz), 28GHz (28.9-29.5GHz) spectrum to build a private 5G network in the NEWGENS building in Anyang to test robots, AR/VR, 5G equipment performance, etc.
In December 2022, Newgens was allocated a private 5G frequency of 4.7 GHz (4.72-4.82GHz), 28GHz (28.9-29.5GHz) by the government and built a private 5G network at Lotter World, South Korea's largest amusement park. Newgens built a 28GHz private 5G network in the area where the Atlantis attraction is located in Lotte World, and Lotte World will provide an immersive parallel reality experience service using motion sensors, cameras, and motion simulators.
In September 2023, Newgens applied for and allocated additional 4.7GHz (100MHz)/28GHz (600MGz) spectrum for Daedeok University in Daejeon and NewGens Research Center in Gwacheon. First, Daedeok University offers a realistic virtual reality military training service over a 28GHz private 5G network. In addition, the NewGens Research Center in Gwacheon has built a private 5G network and is using it as a testbed to test private 5G network equipment, terminals, intelligent factories, and immersive services.

<Atlantis actual ride in Lotte World: Speed 72Km/h>
Immersive Parallel Reality Virtual Ride Experience Service Motion-sensing-based immersive parallel reality experience service in outdoor amusement rides (Atlantis) (Using private 5G in the 28GHz band, the company enables real-time, large-scale video and motion data transmission on rides, which is not possible with existing Wi-Fi, providing customers with the same immersive and experiential services as in the field).
<Lotte World's Private 5G network and application>
Lotte World provides a virtual ride experience service using a private 5G network and motion sensing technology (a screen/monitor in the experience center displays a forward view of the actual Atlantis, and the chair the visitor is sitting in moves in three dimensions according to the actual driving situation of Atlantis). Since it is not an actual ride, the elderly and infirm who could not ride the actual ride can ride, and children can ride without height restrictions. ① Atlantis, a ride at Lotte World, is equipped with a 5G 28GHz transmission module with built-in camera and motion sensor. ② The transmission module sends video and motion data to the motion simulator through a private 5G network. ③ Visitors seated in the motion simulator can virtually experience the realistic attraction.
Data transmitted over a high-capacity/low-latency private 5G network Uplink: High-capacity video (4K: 40Mbps uplink, 8K: 200Mbps uplink) and motion data (6DOF) from the 28GHz 5G transmission module (including camera and motion sensor) mounted on Atlantis is transmitted to the motion simulator in the virtual experience center via a private 5G network.

Why did Lotte World choose a private 5G network?
Private 5G network deployment model: 5G core control plane sharing The 5G core data planes (RU, DU, CU, and UPF) are erected within Lotte World, whereas the 5G core control plane is placed in the cloud outside Lotte World. Video and motion data from rides are delivered to virtual experience centers at Lotte World via UPF, and traffic does not leave the park. In the future, when Lotte World expands to additional sites (Lotte World Busan, Lotte World Water Park in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, and so on), each site will share the 5G core control plane in the cloud, lowering building expenses.

Immersive Multilateral Collaborative Military Training System Powered by XR HMDs and Private 5G
Military (combat) training based on realistic virtual augmented reality using 28 GHz at Daedeok University's Military Training Experience Center: Previously, military training has been conducted using single-user XR simulators due to the limitations of existing wired and wireless communication. Daedeok University uses private 5G and XR HMDs to conduct military training with multiple people collaborating simultaneously through multilateral high-speed wireless connections to enhance realism and increase the effectiveness of training. Not only XR HMD (Head Mounted Display) but also various real equipment will be connected to the communication network and utilized for equipment.

Application-level requirements
Solution: Private 5G
How Private 5G Works Highest downlink speed: 600 MHz bandwidth in the 28 GHz band enables downlink high-definition XR for multiple users Ultra-low latency: With RTT of 3-4ms, the screen of the HMD is reflected in real time according to movement, significantly reducing dizziness and headaches, and equipment operation data is also transmitted in real time, enabling realistic training. Security: In-house network ensures data confidentiality
