KT's AWS Cloud-based Private 5G network deployment in Korea

In 2022, KT deployed private 5G networks at Bundang Seoul National University Hospital, Samsung Medical Center, Navy Headquarters, and Korea Aerospace Industries. In all four cases, the 5G RAN and 5G core were installed on-premise.

KT announced its cloud-based private 5G network deployment strategy in cooperation with AWS and Nokia at the AWS Seoul Summit on May 3, 2023 (KT built a cloud-based private 5G network testbed at KT Research and Development Center in cooperation with the two companies in late 2022).

The key feature is that the 5G Core is hosted in AWS Seoul Region, which is a public cloud.

Only the 5G RAN is deployed at the enterprise site, while the 5G Core is hosted in the cloud and shared by different enterprises.

For companies that require ultra-low latency applications or strict data privacy, 5G RAN and UPF are installed on-site. In this case, only the 5G core control plane is shared among multiple enterprises.

By sharing the 5G core or 5G core control plane, it is possible to reduce the cost of deployment compared to the on-premise type.

By offering not only the existing on-premise model, but also the 5G core control plane sharing and 5G core sharing models, KT is able to provide a private 5G network with a variety of deployment choices based on the enterprise's needs.
