Four deregulations in IoT in 2016.
1. Alleviation of transmit power limit in IoT-dedicated network (May 2016)
- Transmit power limit in IoT-dedicated, unlicensed 900 MHz band (917 - 923.5 MHz) raised from 10 mW to 200 mW by 20 times
- 'Radio Equipment Directive' amended by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) in May 2016
- Costs for building networks down by 70%
- SK Telecom launched a nationwide IoT-dedicated network in the end of June
2. Additional spectrum assignment for IoT (scheduled in October 2016)
- Additional spectrums at 1.7 GHz and 5 GHz assigned for IoT to cope with expected increase in demands as more IoT devices are used
- 'Table of Radio Frequency Allocation' and ‘Standards of Radio Equipment' to be amended by the MSIP in Oct. 2016
3. Approval process waiver for IoT plans (scheduled in September 2016)
- To expedite launch of new services, approval for IoT plans is no longer required
- Relevant government notification to be amended by the MSIP in Sep. 2016
4. Alleviation of requirements for location information service (scheduled in September 2016)
- Location information-based business requires filing only, and not permission any more
- Relevant act ('Act on the Protection, Use, etc. of Location Information') to be amended by the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) in Sep. 2016
