6 New Home IoT Services by LG U+
05/18/2015 | By NETMANIAS (tech@netmanias.com)

  • New home IoT services driven by the Korea's first Z-wave commercialization:  U+ Switch, U+ Plug, U+ Energy Meter, U+ Open Sensor, Door Lock, and Room Temperature Regulator
  • Remotely control lights, room temperature, plugs and door locks, check the electricity usage, or detect intrusion using window sensors at home
  • In line with its open source IoT platform policy, LG U+ is currently in partnership with 8 partners, including LG Electronics and Kiturami Boiler, and plans to extend to more service areas and manufacturers over time
  • Trial service begins in June, and nationwide service to follow

LG U+ (Vice President Sang-chul Lee / www.uplus.co.kr) showcased 6 new home IoT services (out of 10 services to be released in the second half of the year) at "New Life Experience Room" in its new headquarters on the 17th.

During the event, 6 new services - U+ Switch, U+ Plug, U+ Energy Meter, U+ Open Sensor, U+ Door Lock, and U+ Room Temperature Regulator - were introduced to the public for the first time. In addition, Gas Lock and Home CCTV Momca 2, two other services launched last year, were demonstrated as well, proclaiming the arrival of home IoT platform era.

LG U+ said it will open the source of ‘IoT@Home Platform' that can support all home IoT services at once to the public, and evolve it into one that can create a virtuous circle connecting various manufacturers, developers and service providers.

The ‘IoT@Home Platform, connected with Z-Wave, a wireless communication solution, is known to let a smartphone user access IoT-based home services anytime, anywhere.

Z-wave is suitable for use with almost any kind of home appliances and battery-operated sensors. So, it allows you to customize how they interwork with each other according to your life style.

Last December, LG U+ joined the Z-Wave Alliance and became a member of its board of directors - for the first time in Asia. The alliance has over 300 members around the world.

U+ Energy Meter, co-developed with a startup, ENCORED Technologies, is designed to yield energy savings by letting you remotely monitor the electricity usage at home in real-time, and use the data for month-to-month comparison, and so on.

You can also use U+ Room Temperature Regulator, intended for exclusive use in boilers by Kiturami, a Korean boiler manufacturer, to remotely control the temperature of your rooms, simply by replacing the temperature regulator in your current boiler.

With U+ Switch, you can remotely control, or even set on/off timer of, the lights at home using your smartphone. U+ Plug lets you turn on/off plugs, preventing undesired consumption of standby power.

The company also showcased U+ Door Lock that lets you remotely open and close the door for added security and U+ Open Sensor that alerts you if a window is open or closed when unwanted. These two services are to be interworking with a feature of Home CCTV Momca service that automatically records and sends alerts in case of intrusion.

LG U+, in cooperation with LG Electronics, is currently developing other services that would be based on interworking between Homechat appliances, like A/C, refrigerator, washer, oven, vacuum cleaner, etc., and the ‘IoT@Home Platform.

For example, you can set a timer for the washer to start, or the A/C to turn off automatically, when you want.

LG U+ is beginning a trial service for the home IoT services in June, and will release 4 additional home IoT services shortly, extending the service across the nation.

Managing Director Seong-joon Ahn of Converged Home Division said, "Since the release of Momca and Gas Lock last year, LG U+ has been working on development of new intelligent home IoT services and sticking at our open source policy toward our partners. We will continue to do so to lead the home IoT industry, creating new customer value and extending home IoT service."
