KT and LG U+ are known to have over 300,000 UHD IPTV service subscribers now. The two companies have been aggressively marketing the service to UHD TV owners and new HD service subscribers, successfully positioning themselves as the "top two" in the UHD market.
KT's 'Olleh Giga UHD TV' service subscription exceeded 340,000 this month, over 3 times up from 100,000 of April in just 6 months. In other words, the company won an average of over 40,000 new subscribers per month.
A KT person said, "We have launched UHD channels (SkyUHD1, SkyUHD2, and UXN) and UHD VoD service since the UHD service first hit the market in September 2014, in an effort to make our UHD content more powerful and competitive. And it really worked well."
LG U+ also has over 300,000 'tv G 4K UHD' service subscribers now, in just a year after its UHD settop box release back in October, 2014. Among around 2.2 million IPTV subscribers of the company, UHD susbscription accounts for more than 10% - the highest rate among all pay-TV service providers.
Although it was the last to join the UHD market among all 3 IPTV service providers, LG U+ has beaten them by offering more competitive service, like 'Android IPTV' with smart features, 'U+ tv G woofer' with enhanced sound effect, etc., that are specifically targeting HD TV subscribers.
With players like SK Broadband, cable TV service providers, KT Skylife, etc., accelerating to full speed to catch up the unbeatable (so far) top two, KT and LG U+, the total subscription of pay UHD TV service in Korea will most likely exceed 800,000 next month.
