Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), in collaboration with KT (CEO Young-seop Kim), is set to become the first university in South Korea to fully deploy 5G private network infrastructure across its Humanities & Social Sciences Campus in Jongno-gu, Seoul, and its Natural Sciences Campus in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do.
This deployment is part of the “Smart Campus 5G Private Network Deployment Plan” announced at the Humanities & Social Sciences Campus in November 2024, and was completed after approximately eight months of preparation and installation. Through this initiative, SKKU now offers KT’s high-performance 5G private network platform across both campuses.
In this deployment:
KT is responsible for overall management of the 5G private network project.
HFR Co., Ltd. provides and maintains 5G private network equipment, including the service operation management platform, core, base stations, and terminals.
SMEC Co., Ltd. handles 5G private network frequency allocation and system integration (SI).
S-Net System Co., Ltd. serves as SKKU’s network maintenance and deployment partner, overseeing project management, technical support, and maintenance operations.
Students can now access lecture content anytime, anywhere through a variety of digital devices, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops, enabling uninterrupted learning.
In particular, remote learning and real-time content sharing, free from temporal and spatial constraints, are expected to enhance learning engagement and efficiency.
The 5G private network goes beyond simple communication infrastructure, integrating seamlessly with advanced technology-based applications such as AI, automation, and big data.
This not only improves academic management efficiency but also enables campus-wide deployment of robotic solutions and large-scale content sharing, further fostering real-time collaboration and discussion among students.
Most importantly, this 5G private network deployment marks the first case in South Korea where an entire university campus is covered by a private 5G network, providing a significant milestone for the development of various campus applications and the expansion of advanced research infrastructure.
Building on this achievement, SKKU aims to accelerate the creation of a future-oriented educational environment and advance as a digitally innovative campus.
