UHD TV subscriptions in Korea reached 1.2 million, accounting for 10% of total IPTV subscriptions.
UHD IPTV subscriptions marked steep growth, reaching 1.2 million in just one and half year since its launch in September 2014.
As of February, LG U+, KT and SK Broadband, respectively, have 510,000, 480,000 and 200,000 UHD IPTV subscribers.
* Satellite UHD TV (KT Skylife): 130,000
* Cable UHD TV (Cable MSOs): 10,000
LG U+ and KT are obviously leading the UHD IPTV market in the nation. SK Broadband, after some years of struggle, has been rebounding quickly, attracting over 120,000 new subscribers in the first two months of the year only, thanks to earphone remote controls released at the end of last year.
Pay-TV industry explains the subscription growth is attributable to consumer's growing desire for better quality video, predicting the subscription will continue to grow to reach conservatively 2 million by the end of the year.
Another reason for the soaring subscription would be the increased sales of UHD TVs in Korea driven by falling UHD TV prices. According to a market research firm, IHS, UHD TV sales recorded 170,000 last year, and are speculated to reach 680,000 in 2017 and 1.04 million by 2019. IHS also predicted that the percentage of UHD TV in total TV sales will also go up to 8.1% in 2017, 29.7% in 2018 and 44.8% in 2019.
