KT announced on the 10th that its GiGA Wire technology, a telephone line-based Internet technology, was recently approved as an international standard at an ITU-T meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Technologies developed in accordance with international standards and applied accordingly are registered as official Technical Paper if approved by ITU-T.

So, the approval of GiGA Wire technology can be considered as a proof that Korea's advanced Internet technology has been recognized by the world.

With the approval, KT established a bridgehead for export of the technology to the UK, France, the USA, Japan, etc. who have been trying to develop faster wired networks.

The GiGA Wire technology, jointly developed and commercialized by KT and a medium-size vender Ubiquoss, can offer giga-class Internet service with speeds of 600M or higher - more than 3 times faster than the current VDSL - through telephone lines  

Plus, the new technology can be a great option for users living in old apartments or housing complexes where installation of optic cables can be tricky because it can serve those users as well by still using existing telephone lines without having to replace them. 
       
Dr. Dongmyun Lee, Executive Vice President at KT's Institute of Convergence Technology said, "The ITU-T's approval of GiGA Wire proves the excellence in Korea's Internet technology development." He added, "We will continue to endeavor to lead the wireless markets including LTE and 5G as well as the wired market."
